The King Charles Spaniel is a beloved small breed known for its gentle nature, friendly disposition, and adaptability.

Originally bred as a companion dog for royalty, Cavaliers are affectionate and thrive in family settings. They are eager to please, making them generally receptive to training, but their sensitive nature and tendency toward separation anxiety mean they require a gentle and consistent approach. Common Challenges with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Training a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is typically a delightful experience due to their willingness to learn and affectionate nature.

This breed is highly responsive to positive reinforcement, and they often seek to please their owners, making them relatively easy to train.

However, due to their gentle temperament and specific physical traits, training should be approached with sensitivity, structure, and an understanding of their unique needs.

Seperation Anxiety

Cavaliers form strong bonds with their families and may become anxious when left alone for extended periods. Without proper guidance, they can develop separation anxiety, which might result in whining, barking, or destructive behaviour. Gradual separation training and crate training can help them feel more comfortable when alone.

Managing Prey Drive & Recall

Despite their small size, Cavaliers have a moderate prey drive, which can sometimes lead them to chase birds, squirrels, or other small animals. Recall training is essential, as it helps manage their instinct to chase while ensuring safety in open spaces. Starting recall commands early, combined with high-value rewards, helps ensure they respond reliably even when distracted.

Housebreaking

They can sometimes be slower to housebreak than other breeds. Consistency is key, as they respond well to gentle, patient guidance. Using a regular schedule for toilet breaks, along with rewards for successful trips outside, helps reinforce positive habits. Avoiding punishment is particularly important with this breed.

Socialisation

Cavaliers are naturally friendly and social but benefit from early socialisation to build confidence and reduce timidity. Regular exposure to different environments, people, and other animals helps them remain well-adjusted and reduces the likelihood of fear-based behaviours. Positive social experiences can also prevent clinginess by building their independence and adaptability.

Our Approach to Cavalier Training

We understand the unique needs of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and offer training programmes that address their specific temperament and behaviours.

Obedience Training

Cavaliers respond best to a kind, reward-based approach. Our training emphasises essential commands such as “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” using treats and praise to encourage consistent behaviour. With short, engaging sessions, we keep their attention without overwhelming them.

Separation Training

We incorporate exercises that encourage independence, gradually increasing the time they spend alone in a comfortable, secure environment. Our programmes use crate training and calming techniques to help Cavaliers feel at ease when they’re not by their owner’s side.

Socialisation & Confidence

Early socialisation is crucial for Cavaliers to build confidence and remain friendly with people and other animals. We provide structured socialisation sessions in a controlled environment, introducing them to different settings to ensure they are well-mannered and at ease in various situations.

Recall & Impulse Control

Given their prey drive, recall training is particularly important for Cavaliers. We focus on recall commands in safe, controlled spaces to build reliability in returning when called, even if they’re distracted by a potential chase. Rewarding recall consistently reinforces this crucial behaviour.
