Dachshund
Training

The Dachshund, often referred to as the sausage dog, is known for its unique long body and short legs, coupled with a lively, bold personality.

Originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers, Dachshunds are courageous and independent. Their hunting instincts and strong-willed nature can sometimes make training a challenge, but with patience and positive reinforcement, Dachshunds can become well-behaved and loyal companions.

Common Challenges with Dachshunds

Training a Dachshund requires understanding their unique traits and addressing the challenges they present. These dogs may be small, but they have big personalities.

Their independent streak, combined with their strong prey drive, means they often need consistent training to ensure good behaviour.

Additionally, their size and elongated body structure pose physical considerations that should be factored into training exercises. Understanding these traits is key to raising a happy and well-mannered Dachshund.

Strong Prey Drive

Dachshunds were bred as hunters, and this history gives them a strong prey drive. They are naturally inclined to chase small animals, and this can make recall training more difficult. In fact, they can become easily distracted by scents or moving creatures, making it hard to get their attention. Early recall training is crucial to keep them focused.

Stubbornness & Independence

Although Dachshunds are intelligent, they can be quite stubborn, which often makes training a challenge. Their independent nature means they may not always follow commands right away, especially if they’re more interested in doing things their own way. However, with the use of high-value rewards and positive reinforcement, you can motivate them to follow commands more consistently. Patience is essential, as they may take a little longer to respond compared to more eager-to-please breeds.

Barking & Vocalisation

They are known for being vocal, often barking at anything that moves or unfamiliar noises. While this trait was useful for hunting, it can become an issue in a domestic environment, especially if you live in close quarters with neighbours. Training Dachshunds to control their barking and teaching them when it’s appropriate to be quiet is important.

Physical Limitations

Due to their long back and short legs, Dachshunds are prone to back problems, such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). For this reason, it’s important to tailor their training exercises to suit their body structure, avoiding activities that involve jumping or strenuous climbing. Exercises that focus on mental stimulation, like puzzle games, can help keep them engaged without putting stress on their spine.

Our Approach to Dachshund Training

We specialise in training Dachshunds, understanding the unique challenges that come with this breed. Our programmes are designed to address their strong prey drive, independent nature, and vocal tendencies.

Obedience & Recall Training

Given their strong prey drive and distractibility, our training focuses on recall and basic obedience. We teach Dachshunds to respond to commands like “come” and “stay,” even in environments full of distractions.

Managing Barking & Vocalisation

Since Dachshunds are naturally vocal, we focus on teaching them when it’s appropriate to bark and when to be quiet. By using redirection techniques and rewarding calm behaviour, we help reduce excessive barking.

Physical & Mental Stimulation

While Dachshunds have physical limitations due to their body structure, they still need regular exercise and mental stimulation. We incorporate activities like scent work, problem-solving games, and light agility to keep them active without putting unnecessary strain on their spine. This keeps your Dachshund healthy and engaged without risking injury.

Socialisation & Confidence Building

Early socialisation is crucial for Dachshunds to help them feel comfortable in various environments. Our programmes expose them to new situations, people, and other dogs, helping them build confidence and reduce fear-based behaviours. Through gradual exposure and positive reinforcement, we ensure your dog is well-adjusted in social settings.
