When choosing a dog, temperament, size, exercise requirements and suitability for your lifestyle naturally matter. But there is another factor that can have an enormous impact on the years you spend together: breed health.
Some dog breeds have been developed around physical features that can increase the risk of breathing difficulties, joint disease, spinal problems or other inherited conditions. Others have retained relatively functional body shapes, strong working ability and comparatively good longevity.
That does not mean there is such a thing as a completely healthy dog breed. Every breed has genetic conditions that can occur, and two dogs of the same breed can have very different health outcomes. Breeding practices, genetic diversity, diet, body weight, exercise, preventative healthcare and simple luck all play a part.
So when we talk about the healthiest dog breeds, we are not suggesting that these dogs never become ill. Instead, we are looking at breeds generally associated with functional conformation, good physical resilience, reasonable longevity and, in many cases, fewer severe structural problems than some other breeds.
This guide takes a much closer look at ten breeds often regarded as relatively robust, including their expected longevity, physical strengths, lifestyle requirements, genetic health concerns and the health screening a responsible breeder should consider.
There is no single measurement that determines whether one breed is healthier than another. Longevity is useful, but living for a long time does not necessarily mean a dog will remain free from chronic illness.
A better assessment considers several factors together.

The Basenji is one of the world’s oldest recognised dog types, originating from Central Africa where dogs of this type were used for hunting. Lean, athletic and remarkably agile, the breed has retained a very natural and functional body shape.
Basenjis are medium-small dogs without the exaggerated features seen in many modern breeds. They have a balanced frame, relatively long muzzle and strong cardiovascular endurance. Their physical construction is one reason they can remain active well into later life.
Many Basenjis live into their early teens, although lifespan naturally varies between individuals.
The Basenji is certainly not free from hereditary disease. One of the best-known conditions associated with the breed is Fanconi syndrome, a disorder affecting the kidneys’ ability to correctly reabsorb nutrients and electrolytes.
Responsible breeding and genetic testing have made it possible to reduce the risk of producing affected puppies, which demonstrates why choosing a health-tested breeder is so important even when considering a generally robust breed.
Eye conditions including forms of progressive retinal atrophy can also occur. Hip problems and thyroid disease may be encountered in some individuals.
Prospective owners should therefore never interpret the Basenji’s reputation for hardiness as a reason to ignore health screening.
Basenjis are energetic, curious and independent dogs. Maintaining good health means providing considerably more than a short walk around the block.
They benefit from daily physical exercise alongside opportunities to sniff, explore and use their brains. Their hunting background can produce a substantial prey drive, so secure exercise areas and careful recall training are important.
They are also famous for rarely producing a conventional bark, instead using a distinctive collection of vocalisations often described as a yodel.
Why they make the list: functional conformation, athletic build, good general longevity and the availability of genetic screening for important inherited diseases.
Few breeds demonstrate physical durability quite like the Australian Cattle Dog. Developed to move cattle across enormous distances in demanding Australian conditions, these dogs were bred around stamina, toughness and working ability rather than purely appearance.
The result is a compact, muscular and exceptionally energetic dog capable of sustained physical activity.
Australian Cattle Dogs have earned a reputation for longevity and can remain remarkably active into their senior years when kept at a healthy weight and provided with appropriate exercise.
The breed nevertheless has several known inherited conditions.
Progressive retinal atrophy can cause deterioration of the retina and eventual blindness. Genetic testing is available for important forms affecting the breed.
Primary lens luxation is another inherited eye condition that can cause considerable pain and loss of vision.
Congenital deafness is also associated with Australian Cattle Dogs. A dog can be deaf in one ear without the problem being immediately obvious, which is why BAER hearing testing can be valuable.
Hip and elbow dysplasia can occur, despite the breed’s athletic construction, making joint screening important in breeding dogs.
Australian Cattle Dogs need significant physical and mental activity, but owners should not confuse health with endless high-impact exercise.
Constant ball chasing, repetitive jumping and excessive running can put unnecessary strain on joints and soft tissues. A healthier routine combines walking, controlled running, scent work, training, problem solving and appropriate rest.
This is an extremely intelligent working breed that can become frustrated when its physical needs are met but its brain is given nothing meaningful to do.
Why they make the list: exceptional working endurance, functional body structure, generally strong physical resilience and relatively good longevity.
The Beagle is a compact scent hound developed to work for long periods while following scent. Their body is generally well proportioned and free from many of the extreme structural characteristics associated with poor health in some breeds.
Beagles commonly live into their teens and are often energetic well beyond middle age.
However, describing the Beagle as having almost no genetic health problems, as is sometimes claimed, would be inaccurate.
Several recognised genetic conditions can occur within Beagle populations, and responsible breeders can test for a number of them.
These include Musladin-Lueke Syndrome, which affects connective tissue and can cause abnormalities involving the skeleton, skin and mobility.
Neonatal Cerebellar Cortical Degeneration is a neurological disease affecting movement and coordination in young puppies.
Imerslund-Gräsbeck Syndrome affects the dog’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 properly. Lafora disease, a progressive neurological disorder associated with seizures and involuntary movements, can also occur in the breed.
Epilepsy and some inflammatory conditions are also seen in Beagles.
For many pet Beagles, however, one of the most preventable threats to long-term health is not a rare genetic disease. It is obesity.
Beagles are famously enthusiastic about food. Their extraordinary nose also makes them very effective at finding anything remotely edible.
Allowing a Beagle to become overweight increases pressure on joints, can reduce exercise tolerance and contributes to broader metabolic health problems.
Owners should monitor body condition rather than relying only on a number on the scales.
The long ears of the Beagle can also reduce airflow around the ear canal, meaning regular ear checks are sensible.
Why they make the list: good average longevity, functional construction, strong stamina and the ability to remain active into later life when kept lean and well exercised.
The Border Collie has been shaped by generations of demanding work. A sheepdog that cannot run, turn, balance, concentrate and work for prolonged periods would historically have had little practical value.
This working heritage has produced one of the most athletic and capable dog breeds in the world.
Border Collies regularly remain energetic into their senior years and UK longevity research places the breed around the 13-year mark on average.
Being physically capable does not mean Border Collies are genetically uncomplicated.
In fact, modern health screening can identify a substantial number of inherited conditions within the breed.
These include Collie eye anomaly, trapped neutrophil syndrome, ceroid lipofuscinosis, sensory neuropathy and Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome.
Some Border Collies carry the MDR1 gene variant, which can alter sensitivity to certain medications.
Hip and elbow dysplasia can occur, as can inherited deafness and forms of eye disease. Epilepsy is another significant concern in some Border Collie lines and cannot simply be eliminated through one straightforward DNA test.
Physical health is only part of responsible Border Collie ownership.
These dogs have been selectively bred for intense concentration, environmental awareness, movement sensitivity and responsiveness to a handler. In the wrong environment, those same qualities can contribute to obsessive behaviour, frustration, chasing, reactivity or difficulty switching off.
A healthy Border Collie therefore needs both appropriate physical exercise and opportunities to use its brain without being kept permanently overstimulated.
Why they make the list: excellent functional anatomy, impressive stamina, good longevity and a long history of selection for physical working ability.
The Labrador Retriever remains one of Britain’s most popular dogs, and there are good reasons for its enduring appeal. Labradors are generally sociable, trainable, physically capable and adaptable to a wide range of roles including family companionship, assistance work, detection work and gundog activities.
Large UK longevity research has estimated median Labrador life expectancy at just over 13 years, which is a respectable figure for a relatively large dog.
However, Labradors should not be presented as genetically problem-free.
Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are two of the most important conditions to consider. Both involve abnormal development of the joints and may contribute to pain, lameness and arthritis.
Responsible breeders use hip and elbow screening to make more informed breeding decisions.
Several genetic tests are also relevant to Labradors, including those covering progressive retinal atrophy, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse, hereditary nasal parakeratosis and certain skeletal and eye disorders.
Perhaps the Labrador’s greatest everyday health challenge is weight management.
Labradors are famously food motivated, and some have genetic differences associated with increased appetite. Combined with generous owners and insufficient exercise, this can make weight gain extremely easy.
Keeping a Labrador lean throughout adulthood is one of the simplest things an owner can do to protect mobility and general health.
A Labrador should have a visible waist when viewed from above and the ribs should be easy to feel beneath a light covering of tissue.
Why they make the list: strong average longevity for their size, versatile working ability, generally functional conformation and extensive health screening options that allow responsible breeders to reduce inherited risk.
The Shiba Inu provides one of the strongest arguments for inclusion in a guide about long-lived dog breeds.
This ancient Japanese breed is compact, athletic and free from severe exaggeration in body shape. Large UK lifespan research has estimated median life expectancy at around 14.6 years, placing the Shiba among the longer-lived breeds recorded in the study.
That longevity does not guarantee that every Shiba will remain healthy, but it is a useful indication of the breed’s overall resilience.
Eye health is an important consideration within the breed. Conditions affecting the internal structures of the eye can occur, which is why eye examination and relevant screening are important when breeding.
Hip dysplasia can also occur despite the Shiba’s relatively compact size. Patellar luxation, where the kneecap moves out of its normal position, is another condition prospective owners may encounter.
Skin problems and allergies can affect some individuals.
The Shiba’s physical robustness should not be confused with easy ownership.
Shibas are independent, alert and often highly opinionated dogs. Many have strong hunting instincts and can be selective about when they consider their owner’s requests worth following.
They need good socialisation, careful handling and training that takes their independent character into account.
Why they make the list: excellent recorded longevity, compact functional conformation, athletic ability and relatively few structural exaggerations.
The Siberian Husky was developed to do something extraordinarily demanding: travel considerable distances while pulling relatively light loads through extremely cold environments.
That job required cardiovascular fitness, efficient movement, strong feet, physical endurance and the ability to work while using energy economically.
Well-bred Huskies remain impressive canine athletes today.
Two areas deserve particular attention in the Siberian Husky: eyes and hips.
Inherited eye conditions recognised within the breed include hereditary cataracts, glaucoma and other ocular abnormalities. Responsible breeding programmes therefore place considerable emphasis on regular eye examinations.
Hip dysplasia can also occur, making hip scoring of breeding dogs important even though the breed’s historical working function has helped maintain generally good mobility.
Another condition associated particularly with northern breeds is zinc-responsive dermatosis, which affects the skin and may require veterinary management.
Huskies were built for endurance, but modern owners still need to exercise them appropriately.
They are highly active dogs with strong running instincts. Their exercise should combine walking, exploration, appropriate running and mental stimulation.
Their thick double coat also means owners need to pay attention to temperature and exercise intensity during warm weather. A dog designed for Siberian winters requires sensible management on a hot British summer afternoon.
Why they make the list: exceptional endurance, functional working conformation and a history built around physical efficiency rather than exaggerated appearance.
The English Foxhound is perhaps less familiar as a household pet than many breeds on this list, but physically it represents generations of selection for stamina.
Foxhounds were expected to travel considerable distances across varied terrain while remaining capable of working as part of a group. Dogs with poor movement, weak cardiovascular capacity or serious structural problems simply could not perform that role effectively.
The modern English Foxhound remains a substantial, athletic hound with a strong frame and considerable exercise capacity.
The English Foxhound has a comparatively small pet population, which means there is less large-scale companion dog health data available than for breeds such as the Labrador or Beagle.
That itself is important when discussing claims that the breed is unusually healthy. A lower volume of recorded disease does not necessarily prove that a condition never occurs.
Joint problems including hip dysplasia remain possible. Their long, dropped ears should also be checked regularly because reduced airflow can contribute to ear problems in susceptible dogs.
As a relatively deep-chested dog, owners should also be familiar with the warning signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat, even though individual risk varies.
Physical health is only one part of deciding whether an English Foxhound is suitable for a home.
These dogs were created to follow scent and travel. They can be independent, energetic and highly motivated by smells in the environment.
A household unable to provide sufficient exercise, secure space and meaningful activity may struggle regardless of how physically healthy the dog is.
Why they make the list: strong functional construction, endurance-focused breeding history and the absence of many extreme anatomical features.
The Standard Poodle’s fashionable appearance sometimes disguises what the breed originally was: an athletic water-retrieving dog.
Beneath the carefully groomed coat is a well-proportioned, active and highly intelligent working breed capable of impressive levels of exercise.
Standard Poodles commonly reach their early teens and can remain active for much of their lives.
The breed does have several significant health concerns, which means responsible breeding is extremely important.
Progressive retinal atrophy can occur, and DNA testing exists for relevant forms of the disease.
Von Willebrand disease, an inherited blood-clotting disorder, is another condition for which genetic testing can be relevant.
Hip dysplasia should also be considered in Standard Poodles.
Other conditions associated with the breed include Addison’s disease, sebaceous adenitis and gastric dilatation-volvulus. Not all of these can be predicted or eliminated through simple DNA testing.
Poodles are frequently described as hypoallergenic, but this can be misleading.
No dog can be guaranteed not to trigger an allergic reaction. Allergens are associated with substances including skin flakes, saliva and urine rather than simply loose hair.
Poodles generally shed considerably less loose hair than many breeds, which can make them easier for some allergy sufferers to live with, but individual reactions vary.
Why they make the list: good longevity, athletic functional construction, high activity levels and extensive health testing possibilities when puppies are produced responsibly.
The Belgian Malinois is one of the most physically capable working dogs in the world.
Used internationally in police, military, detection and protection work, the Malinois has been selected for speed, endurance, agility, confidence and willingness to work.
The breed has a relatively light, athletic frame rather than the heavier construction seen in some similarly sized working dogs. This contributes to its remarkable movement and physical efficiency.
Malinois are often physically robust, but they are certainly not immune to inherited disease.
Hip and elbow dysplasia can occur, making appropriate joint screening important within breeding programmes.
Epilepsy is also recognised within Belgian Shepherd populations and should be taken seriously when researching bloodlines.
Eye disorders can occur, and responsible breeders should follow current breed-specific health screening recommendations rather than relying purely on a dog’s working ability or appearance.
The Malinois is capable of astonishing physical performance, which occasionally becomes a problem in itself.
These dogs are extremely driven and may continue working despite minor injuries. Repetitive jumping, hard landings, high-speed turns and uncontrolled impact can produce muscular, tendon and joint injuries even in a genetically sound dog.
Conditioning, warm-ups, recovery and sensible exercise matter for serious working dogs just as they do for human athletes.
It is also important not to confuse physical health with suitability as a family pet.
The Belgian Malinois can be intense, environmentally responsive, fast to react and extraordinarily motivated to work. These characteristics are invaluable in specialist working environments but can overwhelm inexperienced owners.
A healthy dog living in an unsuitable environment can still experience significant behavioural and welfare problems.
Why they make the list: athletic construction, impressive stamina, high physical capability and a working history that has placed considerable value on functional soundness.
It is tempting to turn breed health into a simple league table, but lifespan data should be interpreted carefully.
Studies use different populations, sample sizes and data sources, while individual dogs can live substantially longer or shorter lives than their breed average.
Among the breeds in this guide, the Shiba Inu stands out particularly strongly in recent UK longevity data, with a median life expectancy of around 14.6 years.
The Labrador Retriever and Border Collie also perform relatively well considering their body size, with figures around the 13-year mark in large UK datasets.
But longevity alone should never determine which breed you choose. A dog that lives for 14 years but is completely incompatible with your lifestyle is not a better choice than a breed with a slightly shorter average lifespan that fits your home perfectly.
Several dogs on this list are traditional working breeds, and that is not entirely coincidental.
Historically, a working dog had to remain physically capable of doing its job. A sled dog needed endurance. A cattle dog needed agility and toughness. A sheepdog needed speed and coordination. A hunting hound needed stamina.
Selection for genuine working ability can therefore help preserve functional anatomy.
However, working heritage does not automatically equal perfect health. Genetic bottlenecks can still develop, hereditary diseases can become established within particular bloodlines and modern breeding priorities can change.
That is why health screening remains important even for breeds with excellent working reputations.
One of the most important lessons for anyone choosing a puppy is that breed reputation is not enough.
You could select one of the healthiest dog breeds in the world and still dramatically increase your risk of problems by buying from poorly selected parents.
Responsible breeders should understand the hereditary conditions affecting their breed and use the appropriate health screening available.

The appropriate tests vary enormously between breeds. Having a certificate saying a dog is “health tested” means very little unless the breeder has actually completed the tests relevant to that particular breed.
If you are buying a pedigree puppy, ask specific questions rather than simply asking whether the parents are healthy.
A knowledgeable breeder should be willing to discuss weaknesses as well as strengths. Claims that a bloodline has “never had any health problems” should not automatically be interpreted as reassuring.
Every established breed has health considerations. Understanding and managing them is a sign of responsible breeding, not an admission of failure.
Genetics matter, but they are only part of the picture.
Owners have considerable influence over many of the factors that affect their dog’s long-term health.
Excess body weight places additional strain on joints and can contribute to numerous health problems.
Because weight usually increases gradually, owners can become accustomed to seeing an overweight dog and begin to regard that shape as normal.
Monitor body condition throughout your dog’s life rather than waiting for obesity to become obvious.

However, exercise should suit the dog’s age, breed, physical condition and development.
A growing puppy does not require the same exercise programme as an adult working dog, and a 12-year-old Labrador may need a different routine from the one it enjoyed at four.
A complete, balanced diet in appropriate quantities is fundamental to canine health.
The most expensive food is not automatically the healthiest, and adding numerous supplements to an already balanced diet does not necessarily improve it.
What matters is meeting the nutritional needs of the individual dog while maintaining a healthy body condition.
Dental disease is extremely common in dogs and becomes increasingly important with age.
Regular dental care and veterinary examination can help identify problems before they become severe.
Changes in thirst, appetite, weight, mobility, behaviour, sleep or toilet habits can sometimes be early signs of disease.
Dogs cannot tell us when something feels slightly wrong. Owners who understand their dog’s normal behaviour are often best placed to notice subtle changes early.
You will often hear that crossbreeds are automatically healthier than pedigree dogs because of “hybrid vigour”. The reality is more complicated.
Greater genetic diversity can reduce the likelihood of certain recessive inherited diseases becoming concentrated within a population. However, a crossbreed can still inherit health problems from either parent.
Crossing two breeds carrying similar joint, eye or neurological risks does not magically remove those risks.

Small and medium-sized breeds tend to have longer average lifespans than large and giant breeds. Recent UK research has identified breeds including the Lancashire Heeler, Tibetan Spaniel, Bolognese, Shiba Inu, Papillon and Border Terrier among those with particularly high median life expectancy.
Not necessarily, but larger dogs generally have shorter average lifespans than smaller dogs. Giant breeds in particular tend to age faster and may experience greater risks from certain joint, cardiac and developmental conditions.
Not automatically. Selection for genuine working ability can help maintain functional movement and physical soundness, but working populations can still carry inherited diseases. Health testing and responsible breeding remain important regardless of whether dogs come from working or show lines.
No. Health testing reduces avoidable risk; it cannot guarantee lifelong health. Many diseases involve multiple genes, environmental influences or conditions for which no predictive test currently exists.
Look beyond appearance. Research the health problems associated with the breed, check the relevant test results for both parents, ask about longevity and illness within the wider family, meet the mother where possible and choose a breeder who prioritises health, temperament and function.
The Basenji, Australian Cattle Dog, Beagle, Border Collie, Labrador Retriever, Shiba Inu, Siberian Husky, English Foxhound, Standard Poodle and Belgian Malinois all have qualities that can justify their reputation as relatively robust dogs.
Some demonstrate excellent longevity. Others have retained functional anatomy through generations of working selection. Many now benefit from sophisticated DNA testing and screening programmes that allow responsible breeders to significantly reduce the risk of inherited disease.
But there is no breed that comes with a health guarantee.
A poorly bred puppy from a supposedly healthy breed can face considerably more problems than a carefully bred puppy from a breed with recognised health concerns.
When choosing a dog, look beyond lists of the healthiest dog breeds. Consider the individual breeder, the parents, health test results, family history, body shape, temperament and whether the breed genuinely suits the life you can provide.
Then, once your dog is home, the responsibility moves to you. Keeping them lean, appropriately exercised, mentally fulfilled and receiving suitable veterinary care can have just as much influence on their quality of life as the breed name written on their paperwork.
